Following the death of a young boy on a water slide in Kansas, questions are being asked as to why Alabama has no inspection of amusement parks.
Caleb Schwab was on the world’s tallest waterslide at the Schlitterbahn WaterPark in Kansas City, Kansas, when he was decapitated.
At present, Alabama is one of six states with no inspections of amusement parks along with Mississippi, Nevada, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.
Public health officials in Alabama have said that the accident in Kansas was uncommon and they do not expect Alabama to begin inspecting rides.
In addition, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) says that the individual states are best equipped to regulate their own amusement parks – even though six do not do so. The IAAPA goes on to say that the states with zero regulation do not have many amusement parts and in fact Wyoming has none.
However, in Alabama there are fixed amusement parks as well as traveling carnival rides and neither category are inspected or regulated.
